Plant Manager

10+ years · R1.1m - R1.5m p.a. (indicative market range)

A Plant Manager carries full accountability for a manufacturing site: safety, output, cost, quality and people. They turn group targets into a daily operating rhythm, lead the production, maintenance, quality and stores teams, and report to divisional or group leadership on how the site is performing and what it needs.

What the role involves

  • Safe, compliant operation of the whole site, including OHS Act legal appointments where required
  • Meeting production, efficiency (OEE), yield and delivery targets
  • Owning the site budget, cost per unit and capital projects
  • Leading department heads, shift structures and labour relations, often in a unionised environment
  • Driving continuous improvement, lean and maintenance reliability
  • Customer and ISO audits, and quality performance

What makes a strong candidate

We look for a proven record of running a plant or a large production area, not only a department. Strong candidates can show measurable results (safety, OEE, cost, waste), have managed through industrial-relations challenges, and lead with visibility on the floor. An engineering or operations qualification is usual; experience in a similar process (for example food, packaging, chemicals, metals or automotive components) matters a great deal.

Red flags we screen for

  • “Plant Manager” title but responsible for only one line or department
  • No figures to back up claimed improvements
  • Poor safety record or unclear reasons for leaving

How PMG recruits Plant Managers

Plant Manager searches are mostly headhunted, because the best candidates are already employed and not applying for jobs. We map comparable manufacturers, approach candidates confidentially, and screen on results, leadership style, IR experience, salary and notice period. Shortlisted candidates have given written consent. See our Plant Manager Recruitment page and our article on Plant Manager salaries in South Africa.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a Plant Manager and an Operations Manager?

A Plant Manager is usually accountable for one site end to end. An Operations Manager may run production across several sites, or focus on production while another manager owns the site.

How long does it take to recruit a Plant Manager?

Typically four to eight weeks to an appointment, plus the candidate’s notice period, which is often one to three months at this level.
