How to Recruit a Project Team for a Renewable Energy Project in South Africa

EMPLOYER INSIGHTS · October 5, 2026

South Africa’s solar, wind and battery storage pipeline is the busiest it has ever been. Every project that reaches financial close needs an experienced team on site within months — and developers, EPC contractors and operators are all fishing in the same small pool of people with real renewable energy experience. Here is a practical guide to building that team without delaying construction.

1. Start recruiting at financial close, not at construction

The most common mistake is waiting until the construction start date is fixed. By then, the best project managers, high-voltage engineers and commissioning specialists are often already committed to other projects. Experienced people typically need to give one to three months’ notice, so a search that starts at financial close gives you a realistic chance of having them on site when you break ground.

2. Write one team plan for the whole project

Before you advertise a single role, map every position you will need, when each person must start, and where they will be based. A simple team plan stops you from hiring in a rush, keeps the budget honest and lets one recruitment partner work on several roles at the same time.

Project phaseTypical roles
Pre-constructionProject director or manager, project engineer, planner, quantity surveyor or cost controller, contracts and procurement
ConstructionConstruction and site managers, civil, electrical and mechanical supervisors, SHEQ manager and officers, quality (QA/QC) inspectors, environmental officer, document controller, community liaison officer
Grid connection and commissioningHV and substation engineers, commissioning manager and engineers, protection and SCADA specialists
OperationsO&M or site manager, technicians, asset manager, finance and administration

3. Fill the scarce roles first

Not every role is equally hard to fill. In our experience the longest searches are usually for:

  • High-voltage, grid and substation engineers — few people have both the technical depth and utility-scale project experience.
  • Commissioning managers and engineers — especially for battery energy storage (BESS).
  • Planners with Primavera P6 experience on large projects.
  • SHEQ managers who know construction-phase legislation and remote sites.
  • Community liaison and economic development officers who understand local communities around the site.

Start these searches first and fill the more widely available roles in parallel.

4. Think local — and plan for remote sites

Many projects are built in the Northern Cape, Free State, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West, far from the big cities where much of the experienced talent lives. Two approaches work well together: recruit people who already live near the site wherever possible (which also supports local employment commitments), and attract experienced specialists from further away with rotation schedules, accommodation and travel arrangements that make the move worthwhile.

5. Budget for the full package, not just the salary

On remote projects, site and travel allowances, accommodation, rotation and project completion bonuses can decide whether a candidate accepts. Benchmark the whole package before you go to market. Our free Renewable Energy Salary Guide 2026 gives indicative ranges for more than 25 roles across development, construction, operations and leadership.

6. Plan the handover to operations early

A project that reaches commercial operation needs a long-term operations and maintenance team. Some construction-phase people will want to stay on; many will move to the next project. Identify the O&M manager and key technicians before construction ends so knowledge is not lost at handover.

A quick checklist

  1. Team plan written: every role, start date and location.
  2. Scarce roles (HV, commissioning, planning, SHEQ) searched first.
  3. Packages benchmarked, including allowances and rotation.
  4. Local hiring approach agreed for the site area.
  5. Interview panels and decision-makers available.
  6. Operations team planned before construction ends.
