How to Hire a Process Engineer in South Africa

EMPLOYER INSIGHTS · September 26, 2026

Employer Insights | Recruitment Strategy

Process Engineer roles are some of the longest-open vacancies in South African manufacturing. Some adverts run for three or four months without the right appointment. The reasons are usually the same: the title covers very different jobs, good engineers are rarely looking, and the salary on offer is often set against advertised averages rather than the real market.

Here’s how to get it right.

1. Be clear about which kind of Process Engineer you need

“Process Engineer” means different things in different industries:

  • Chemical / process plant: mass and energy balances, process safety, HAZOPs, and optimising reactors, separation and utilities. Usually needs a chemical engineering degree.
  • Manufacturing / production process: line balancing, cycle times, tooling, scrap reduction and new product introduction, often in automotive, packaging or FMCG. Industrial and mechanical engineers often do well here.
  • Continuous improvement: Lean, Six Sigma, SPC and data-driven problem solving across the plant.

A job description that mixes all three attracts the wrong applicants. Decide which problems this person must solve in their first year, and write the role around that.

2. Set a realistic salary

From PMG’s 2026 Engineering Salary Guide:

LevelIndicative monthly CTC
Early careerR30,000 – R48,000
ExperiencedR48,000 – R78,000
Senior / leadR78,000 – R130,000+

Premiums apply for process-safety and hazardous-area experience, professional registration with ECSA, and scarce sector experience such as petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals or automotive.

3. Look beyond the job boards

The Process Engineers you most want are usually employed and busy fixing problems, not scrolling adverts. The best routes to them are:

  • referrals from your own engineering team
  • a specialist recruiter with an established candidate database and relationships
  • targeted, direct approaches on LinkedIn
  • graduate and in-service training pipelines, for early-career roles

4. Assess for problem-solving, not just qualifications

Ask every candidate to walk you through a real problem they solved: what the data showed, what they changed and what the measurable result was (yield, scrap, downtime or energy). A short practical exercise or a plant walk-through tells you far more than a CV. Check the tools you rely on too, whether that’s simulation software, SPC, a particular ERP or PLC environment.

5. Plan the timeline

Most employed engineers work a one-calendar-month notice period, and senior people are often on longer. From brief to start date, a realistic timeline is 6 to 10 weeks. Keep interviews close together and have your offer approved in advance. Delays are the single biggest reason good candidates accept elsewhere.

Common mistakes

  • benchmarking salary against advertised averages instead of the market for the level you need
  • a wish-list job description asking for every skill at once
  • three or more interview rounds spread over several weeks
  • no feedback to candidates between stages
