Engineering recruitment is rarely successful when treated as a keyword-matching exercise.

Two candidates may hold the same qualification yet have very different experience in plant environments, projects, maintenance, design, continuous improvement, commissioning or production.

Before approaching the market, employers should consider the environment in which the engineer will actually operate.

Does the position require someone who can work comfortably on a manufacturing floor? Is stakeholder management important? Will the engineer manage contractors? Is this primarily a technical role, a project role or a leadership position?

The clearer those questions are at the beginning of the recruitment process, the more targeted the search can become.
